All of a sudden it was midnight, and I had to find out what happens to Mae and Jack. By 2:30 am, I knew. And I also knew I had read a great book.I think most of us have watched a Mae in our lives; well-meaning (generally), stumbling through life making questionable choices while you silently root for her to change course and help herself. The intertwining story of Mae and those she meets along the way makes for a great read. Anxiously awaiting the next book!

The Clarinet Whale Kimberly Sailor 9780692330852 Books Reviews
I read a pre-release copy of The Clarinet Whale. I love to be surprised as a reader, and now that I'm getting older, it feels like almost all stories are predictable, but The Clarinet Whale continuously surprised me. Mae is a professor, and Jack is a student in the music program at the university where she teaches. They have a possibly inappropriate roommate relationship, where Jack is a tenant in Mae's house. Mae seems mentally unstable, not least because she breaks into churches to steal bread. I'd say the book is primarily about the relationship between Jack and Mae as they both deal with their emotional baggage, but that's all I can say because it has some amazing twists and turns, and I don't want to spoil it for other readers.
I think you'll love this book if you're a fan of magical realism. Has some quirky elements, and some on-the-edge-of-your-seat thrills. One scene of the book left me particularly breathless. I'd recommend this book for book clubs because it leaves enough open-ended questions to generate a good discussion.
I don't usually read books in this genre, but a friend of mine posted about it on Facebook, and the title and the tagline about Mae stealing communion bread intrigued me, so I decided to give it a try.
I loved the unreliable narrator of Mae. Unreliable narrators are fun because you're never quite sure if what he/she reports as happening actually happening the way the narrator claims. Kimberly has a knack for slipping in just the right word or sentence or thought that makes what would have been a good/decent passage turn into an excellent, thought provoking passage. Many times I felt myself going, "Wow. That's a great way to describe that emotion."
I don't usually read a lot of literary fiction, as it tends to drone on and not go anywhere...pages about life and description of leaves and whatnot but not much plot. But "The Clarinet Whale" was a real page-turner of a story in addition to being poignant and literary! I loved the characters. They were all so realistic and flawed.
The author broke SO many "rules" of writing, and it could have ended up a disaster if handled by a less accomplished writer, but she made it work (and made it work well) so that the broken "rules" ended up enhancing the readers' experience and making the story unique and memorable. It's always exciting to me, as a writer, to see another writer break rules and do so beautifully.
Loved it. I hope she writes more books.
Engaging and suspenseful.
This was the selection for our book club last month, and I enjoyed it very much! We had a great discussion about the unexpected turns in the story (none of us saw the ending coming!), why we liked or disliked Mae and Jack, the religious symbolism, the various aspects of magical realism and how they re-defined the story.
I recommend this book – it will entertain you, and if you read it with friends, it will offer a great time of fun and stimulating conversation.
